Sound absorbing materials have been widely used in the vehicle noise control. In this paper, the response surface method is applied to the acoustic modeling of the cab of a heavy truck with a variety of sound absorbing materials attached. Design variables are determined with the panel’s acoustic contribution analysis, and the design of the experiments is made. A simulation model of the cab with the consideration of sound absorption characteristics is built to carry out the designed experiments. With the obtained response variables, the response surface model of the sound pressure on the side of the driver’s right ear is built. The effectiveness of the model is validated. The response surface model has been applied to the thicknesses optimization of the sound absorbing materials for different panels of the cab. It shows that after the optimization, the thicknesses of sound absorbing materials are reduced, and the effect of noise reduction is improved at the same time.
